  • What is Psychometric Testing?
    • Cognitive testing compares a person’s scores to people from their age group.
    • Standardized and normed psychometric instruments used to measure various aspects of a person’s symptoms and functioning.
    • Symptom-specific testing compares people to the general population for their age and to a specific demographic (such as gender, clinical versus nonclinical, education level).
    • Determination of mental health concerns often based on how much a person’s scores differ from the average.
    • These are sophisticated measures that are developed through research.
    • Personality and symptom-specific testing includes assessment of validity of the person’s responses.
    • Multiple tests are usually used to measure the same/similar domains.
    • When various tests are combined to assess an individual, this is called a battery.
    • Diagnostic evaluations include psychometric testing, but these assessments also include clinical interviewing and a review of collateral records.

  • Why Are Diagnostic Evaluations Important?
    • Determine accurate diagnosis using best practice.
    • Diagnosis is critical to informing the most effective treatment.
    • Provide an explanation and understanding of a client’s behavior and symptoms.
    • Determine interventions to help the client succeed given their symptoms and functioning level.
